The 'Flying Away' Blues!

Vast numbers of Christians are living full of fear at what they see happening around the world in general, and in America in particular. They have all the symptoms of what I call, “The Fly Away Blues!” The national anthem of this group is, “Just a few more weary days and then, I’ll fly away.”

Numerous conspiracy theories have spread on social media, particularly on TikTok, that claim the COVID-19 vaccine is the microchip the government wants to install in the population.

With COVID-19, mask mandates, compulsory vaccinations, many are speculating that we could be entering the era of the Mark of the Beast and the imminent flying away of the Church, known theologically as “the rapture of the church.”

In promoting his soon to be released new book titled Where Do We Go From Here?, Pastor David Jeremiah said, “I have just written about ten phenomena happening in our world today that prove tomorrow’s prophecies foreshadow the problems we are experiencing in our world today. They give us BIBLICAL DIRECTION FOR THE END TIMES! There may never be a time in history when end times prophecy is more aligned with the culture and circumstances of the world than it is today.

“But decoding these startling prophetic events can be confusing, and frankly, intimidating to understand. Bible prophecy can be both fascinating and frightening, but it doesn’t have to be. There is hope for us in the looming events of Bible prophecy!”

However, the hope Pastor Jeremiah has in mind is getting to “fly away” in what prophecy pundit, Hal Lindsey referred to as the “Big Snatch” or the rapture of the Church. No position of understanding biblical prophecy has breed the degree of cultural complacency as has his, and many other influential brothers and sisters in the faith who hold Jeremiah’s position. (Jeremiah’s view being that of “dispensational premillennialism”). According to their views, there is no way to fix any of our nation’s problems because the Bible predicts this will come to pass, so we are caught up in a loop of prophetic inevitabilities.

There’s one interesting, but continually over-looked fact: All end times prophetic words have the same success rate of exactly 0% and a failure rate of exactly 100%.

Seduced by the popular craze of newspaper exegesis of the Scriptures that purports to reveal that “the end of history is near”, God’s people are driven not to action, but to radical inactivity, ineffectiveness, and lethargy while waiting for the easy-out "end to come quickly."

We are admonished by these prophetic experts to be like the sons of Issachar in the OT who had an “understanding of the times” (1 Chronicles 12:32). A modern historical example of someone who had a better (because biblical) “understanding the times,” is that of Pastor Josef Tson of Romania:

He writes, “Let me illustrate the importance of understanding the times from my own experience. The communist disaster fell on my country [of Romania] when I was a teenager. For many years after that, my life was a battle for intellectual and spiritual survival under Marxist indoctrination and totalitarian and Christian terror. I struggled to understand the nature of that calamity, and the Lord gave me that understanding. In the forties, I wrote papers on the nature of the failure of communism. One of them, published under the title The Christian Manifesto landed me in six months of house arrest with harsh interrogations by the secret police. But for me the crucial moment came in 1977, when a friend of mine challenged me to set up an organization that would openly expose communism.

“Here is what I told him: ‘Communism is an experiment that has failed. It wasn’t able to fulfill any of its many promises and nobody believes in it anymore. Because of this, it will one day collapse on its own. Now, why should I fight something that is finished? I believe that our task is a different one. When communism collapses, somebody must be there to rebuild society! I believe our job as Christian teachers is to train leaders so that they will be ready and capable to rebuild our society on a Christian basis.

“To my surprise, here is what my friend said to me: ‘Josef, you are wrong. Communism will triumph all over the world, because this is the movement of the Antichrist. And when the communists take over in the United States, they will have no restraining force left. They will then kill all the Christians. We have only one job to do: to alert the world and make ready to die.’

“A few years later my friend was forced to leave Romania. He came to the U.S. and settled down. Then I was forced into exile, and I moved to the U.S. as well. Since then, my friend has not done anything for Romania. He simply waited for the final triumph of communism and the annihilation of Christianity.

“On the other hand, when I came here in 1981, I started a training program for Christian leaders in Romania. We translated Christian textbooks and smuggled them into Romania. With our partners in the organization, The Biblical Education by Extension (BEE), we trained about 1200 people all over Romania. Today, those people who were trained in that underground operation are the leaders in churches, in evangelical denominations, and in key Christian ministries.

“You see, the way you look to the future determines your planning and your actions. It is the way you understand the times that determines what you are going to do.”

Gary DeMar writes, “In a recent sermon, Pastor David Jeremiah called the COVID-19 pandemic “the most apocalyptic thing that has ever happened to us.” Really? Not the black plague that killed 30 to 60 percent of Europe’s population, two world wars, (Some 75 million people died in World War II, including about 20 million military personnel and 40 million civilians, many of whom died from deliberate genocide, massacres, mass-bombings, disease, and starvation.) the economic crisis of the Great Depression, the Dustbowl of the 1930s, or the Spanish Flu that killed 50 million people at a time when the world population was less than two billion?

“We do not need a particular Bible prophecy to tell us what our government is doing regarding the original COVID-19 and subsequent actions are overreach, tyranny, totalitarianism, and despotism. We can add Critical Race Theory, the Green New Deal, government education (indoctrination), the LGBTQ+ forced agenda, the further rise of creeping socialism, the transgender movement, Planned Parenthood, abortion and the selling of aborted baby body parts, and so much more. These are real and tyrannical and totalitarian.

“These are prime indicators of the failed worldview that has arisen to attack “the LORD and His anointed” (Ps. 2:2c). This is the way it’s always been. Sad to say, much of the responsibility resides with Christians who believe that engaging the world with God’s Word is outside the bounds of what we should be doing this side of eternity. If Psalm 2 is not true, then nothing is true. But it is true: “He who sits in the heavens laughs / The Lord scoffs at them” (2:4).”

The way we interpret Scripture has great life-impacting consequences:  If you are convinced that at any moment you will joyfully slip away to heaven and escape the worst this world has to offer, you tend to discount future planning. Why get an education? Why try to pass on an inheritance for future generations when we are the terminal one? Why bring children into this mess that the world is in? Why try to change the world if things are only going to go from bad to worse? Why not dismiss most efforts to fight against sin and evil here and now. What good is a struggle against perversion, poverty, hunger, and homelessness, against the culture of death, against the propaganda of immorality's champions, if we are soon to be snatched away? Why bother, if the fate of the world we will leave behind has already been signed, sealed, and determined to be under the control of the devil and his followers? Why not refocus all our efforts on flying away to heaven as soon as possible?

It's time for takeoff. Not “flying away” but taking off on the gospel of the kingdom assignment to make disciples of all nations.  Believe that the gospel of the kingdom message is the power of God unto salvation! Seek it first! Proclaim it pervasively! Live it personally! It will succeed ultimately – with or without this generation that’s suffering from “frequent flying away blues!”
