Why Are So Many People Running Wild?

Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.” (ESV) The Christian Standard Bible reads, “Without revelation people run wild, but one who follows divine instruction will be happy.” The Berkley Versions says, “the people fall into anarchy.”

America is being threatened by anarchy in unprecedented ways. Overthrow duly elected government, burn the buildings, tear down every monument, rewrite the history, eliminate the nuclear family, the police, and the church, dissolve all national borders, and silence all who dare disagree. This has become the standard in our country.

Black Lives Matter, coupled with Antifa, now married to the leftists Democratic party has become the frontrunner in today’s “people who are running wild movement.” Dr. Michael Brown rightly asserted that “the official BLM movement is Marxist-based, queer-affirming, trans-activist, traditional-marriage degrading, radical-feminist promoting and more.”

The wise man in Prov. 29:18 declares that where “prophetic vision” is missing, the people fall into anarchy.

Here prophetic revelation is simple the Word of God (see 1Sa_3:1). The thought is that when God's Word is not known and honored, the people run wild. The ones who obey the law, that is, the Word of God, are the truly blessed ones. The fatal effect of the absence of such revelation of God’s will is stated to be confusion, disorder, and rebellion; the people, uncontrolled, fall into grievous excesses, which nothing but the absolutes of the obeyed Word of God can restrain.

The key word in the text is the word "vision." What is vision? The Phillips paraphrase of Colossians 1:9 gives us an excellent working definition. Paul said to the Colossians, I pray that you will "see things from God's point of view."

Wherever there is "no vision," no seeing life from God’s viewpoint”, the people of the society, of the community, of the home "CAST OFF RESTRAINT." This is the MORAL effect of a loss of vision. A loss of vision produces moral anarchy, in which "every man does what is right in his own eyes."

This strong Hebrew verb also means "TO DISINTEGRATE." This is the SOCIAL effect of a loss of vision. Sin, which increases proportionately in a society with the loss of spiritual vision, has a centrifugal force about it, driving men outward from the True Center of Life, God Himself, and thus driving them from each other. So we have a fragmented, divided world. Society begins to "loosen, dissolve, break up, go to pieces."

In January 1977 Francis Schaeffer wrote with prophetic foresight: “Overwhelming pressures are being brought to bear on people who have no absolutes, but only have the impoverished values of personal peace and prosperity.  The pressures are progressively preparing modern people to accept a manipulative, authoritarian government.”

Schaeffer was convinced that the loss of God’s absolute “prophetic revelation” would produce an America in which personal peace and prosperity would be the two governing principles of life.

Personal peace means just to be let alone, not to be troubled by the troubles of other people, whether across the world or across the city – to live one’s life with minimal possibilities of being personally disturbed. Personal peace means wanting to have my personal life pattern undisturbed in my lifetime, regardless of what the result will be in the lifetimes of my children and grandchildren. Affluence means an overwhelming and increasing prosperity – a life made up of things, things, and more things – a success judged by an ever-higher level of material abundance.”

With such values, will men stand for their liberties? Thus far the answer is no. They will give up their liberties step by step, election by election, law by law, if their own personal peace and prosperity is sustained and not challenged, and if the goods are delivered.

The invitation of humanistic governments is "Let Big Brother be your shepherd. He will lead you beside new waters; he will prepare your table; he will care for you. Come dwell with him, his rod and staff will comfort you."

This is the cry of Americans everywhere. Take care of all our needs. Joe Morecraft was right when he observed, "This political crisis is a religious crisis. As men change their faith, their politics, worldview and social order change. As America's faith becomes less and less Christian and more and more pagan, its politics, worldview and its social order become more and more dominated by paganistic superstition, magic, hedonism and slavery.”

Society cannot stand chaos and into the situation some group or persons will step in to fill the vacuum. An elitist political party will offer arbitrary absolutes with womb to tomb provision in some form of socialism. But socialism in any and every form is anti
